Tooth Whitening
At Zenith Dentistry we cater to everyone's individual
needs and circumstances, providing a range of tooth
whitening options from simple home packages to
'full-dazzle' in-chair whitening.
Not all people's teeth respond to whitening materials in
the same way. We will help you understand what can be
achieved and what other options there may be.
There are two basic whitening options and much
research has been conducted to find the optimum one:
Home whitening. This involves the construction of
laboratory made, plastic trays that fit the teeth precisely.
A range of different gel concentrations are available such
as 10%, 16% and 20%. The dentist uses his experience
and knowledge of your teeth to select the most suitable
option. The gel is injected into the tray by the patient and
it is either worn overnight or for a set number of hours
during the day. Again, this depends on the dentist's
prescription to you.
In-chair whitening. This is performed in the dental
surgery. A much higher concentration of whitening
material is applied to the teeth. while the lips and gums
are carefully protected. A strong halogen or blue light is
sometimes used to maximise the effect, but it's the gel
that does most of the work by itself.
Home whitening with 10% gel has been found to be the
optimum method. It is also kinder to the teeth and
doesn't carry the risk of excessive sensitivity or of
harming the gums and lips.
Often, a combination of home and in-chair whitening can
be used for patients who want the maximum effect.
