Questions about Dental Implants (FAQs)
Listed below are the most common questions we are asked about Dental Implants. If your question is not answered here, please contact us.
How long do dental implants last?
A properly fitted implant should last a life-time. The implants that we use are specially designed to encourage osseointegration - where natural bone attaches to and grows into the implant. This process makes the implant very strong and the implant effectively becomes a part of you. Crowns and bridges attached to the implants however, typically last about 5-15 years depending upon position and wear. Where the crown or bridge does need to be replaced, the implant should require no special attention and can be done by any qualified dentist.
How long do the procedures take?
A typical single implant procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes. Additional implants done at the same appointment take about half as long. The later sessions involving impressions, try-ins, fitting of the abutment or crown are about 20-40 minutes long.
How long between getting the implant and having a useable tooth?
It is possible to have a completed implant done the same day as the extraction of the failed tooth. Typically, however, there are several separate procedures followed by periods of healing. To ensure the best result we usually wait a 6-8 weeks following the implant placement before exposing it and attaching a healing abutment. Impressions would be made about 3 weeks later and the crown is then attached approximately two weeks after that giving a typical period of 12-14 weeks from start to finish. We will be able to advise you more precisely following your consultation as to how long your treatment will take.
Do you charge extra for x-rays?
The cost of standard x-rays is included within our pricing. Sometimes we need to take more advanced 3D x-rays, especially for multiple implants or where the bone dimensions are not clear; in these circumstances we charge £99 per jaw. All costs will be agreed with you before the commencement of your treatment.
What about aftercare?
We offer unrivalled aftercare. We offer 24 hour telephone support following your procedure and should you need to be seen quickly, we always allow time in our schedule for emergencies. Complications are very rare.
